Being interested in psychiatry he obtained his D. P. M. (Diploma in Psychological Medicine) from Conjoint Board of England in 1967; M. R. C. Psych from Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1972; Fellowship (F. R. C. Psych) from Royal College of Psychiatrists London in 1983, and was awarded fellowship of Pakistan Academy of Medical Sciences in 1992.

Prof Dr. Ijaz Haider's research interest is reflected in his Ph.D. from University of Edinburgh on the topic of "Drug Induced Altered States of Consciousness" in Psychiatry in 1970. He is the only Ph.D. among Pakistani Psychiatrists and has more than 200 publications in Journals of repute of United Kingdom, United States of America and Pakistan. He has written two books on psychiatry and reviewed many research dissertations and thesis in psychiatry of postgraduate psychiatric diploma and degree students.

He held the posts of Secretary General and President, Pakistan Psychiatric Society and is presently the Zonal Representative of W. P. A for Zone 15 (Western Asia)

Dr. Ijaz Haider returned to Pakistan in 1971, served as Consultant Psychiatrist in Govt. Mental Hospital Lahore, for nine years and in 1980 he switched over to teaching cader and served at the Departments of Psychiatry of various Medical Colleges, i.e. King Edward Medical College, Allama Iqbal Medical College,Quaid Azam Medical College and Post Graduate Medical Institute and is presently working as Professor and Head Department of Psychiatry, Allama Iqbal Medical College. He is a visiting psychiatrist to Mental Hospital and Jinnah Hospital, Lahore.

He was the pioneer in starting D. P. M. program in Pakistan and was convener of Diploma in Psychological Medicine (D. P.M.) at the Postgraduate Medical Institute.He has imparted training to 120 doctors to become District Psychiatrists. Thus in nine years he has already trained 120 doctors in the field of Psychiatry of whom fifty five have already passed their D.P.M. examination from University of Punjab and are serving in Azad Kashmir, Sind, N.W.F.P., Balochistan and Rural areas of Punjab as "Distirct Psychiatrists". Some of these psychiatrists are serving in Urban population and few have gone to U.K. and U.S.A. for higher training in psychiatry.

He is supervisor of M.D. (Psychiatry), F.C.P.S-1 & F.C.P.S.-ll. students. His fifteen doctors have already passed F.C.P.S-I of college of physicians and surgeons of Pakistan and five have completed 3-years residency training program for Part-11 F.C.P.S. (Psychiatry). He is examiner for postgraduate psychiatric qualifications.

Prof. Dr. Ijaz Haider has represented Pakistan in numerous National and International symposia and conferences in various countries and presented papers on research teaching and training of Psychiatry and is elected for World Psychiatric Association from Zone-15.

Presently he is involved in conducting WPA Programmes on Depression, Anxiety, Schizophrenia, Dementias, Epilepsy and Psychosomatic Disorders. He has special interest in Behavioral Therapy, Marital Therapy, Sleep Disorder, Bipolar Disorder Substance Abuse and other Psychological and Psychiatric Disorders. He runs a private practice at Ijaz Clinic and Ijaz Psychiatric Institute which has indoor and outdoor patient facility. He teachers Undergraduates and Postgraduate students in Psychiatry and behavioral sciences.
